Five Developmental Areas

Knowing about the five areas of development is important for parents because it helps you understand how your baby is growing and developing. These five areas are: physical development, cognitive development, language and communication development, social and emotional development, and sensory and motor development. By being aware of these areas, you can better support your baby's growth and address any potential issues or concerns early on. This can lead to a happier and healthier childhood for your little one!

  • Physical skills: This encompasses physical growth and the development of motor skills, such as crawling, walking, and fine motor skills like holding a pencil or using utensils.

  • Cognitive skills: This refers to the growth and development of a child's thinking, reasoning, problem-solving, and memory skills.

  • Communication and Language skills: This involves the development of verbal and nonverbal communication, as well as the development of language skills, including listening, speaking, and understanding.

  • Social and Emotional skills: This refers to the growth and development of a child's ability to form relationships, express emotions, and understand the feelings of others.

  • Adaptive skills: This involves the development of practical skills such as self-care, independence, and the ability to navigate daily life.

It's important to note that these areas of development are interconnected and that progress in one area can impact progress in others.

Additionally, the rate of development can vary for each child, and some children may need additional support in one or more areas.

Parents use familiar objects and toys to complete the Ages & Stages Questionnaire, Third Edition. To get the most accurate results, we encourage you to engage in play with your little while conducting the ASQ-3.
